We had just arrived at Chris's apartment on Friday evening and I parked the car. I called my parents to tell them we made it safely and I started smelling something funny. I looked back and saw a bit of smoke in the backseat. I got out and opened the back door and saw that a lot of smoke was coming out of the speakers, I looked through the rear windshield and saw more and more smoke. I walked to the back of the car and popped the trunk and saw flames! I freaked out but thankfully had the sense to immediately call 911. I had no idea what to do besides wait for the fire department and worry about what was burning.
Thankfully some guys working on a house heard me screaming and grabbed a hose to start putting out the fire and soon after the fire department came and put it all out and started throwing everything onto the pavement.
All I can say is that I got a taste of that awful feeling of seeing your possessions burn in front of your eyes. I can't imagine how terrible people must feel when they lose their whole home and memories. Thankfully our Macs and Chris's Fender Stratocaster and amplifier were in the back seat and weren't ruined, but we lost some guitar pedals, hundreds of dollars worth of food, and (sigh) the bag and clothes I had packed for the weekend.
I have the greatest parent's ever because they immediately jumped in the car and started the 5 hour journey to Seattle to help us figure out what to do next and help me be clothed!
Even though my favorite jeans and yellow coat caught on fire, we are okay and that's what matters! I'm even more sure that objects like clothes can't be treasured because they can be lost in an instant!
Lessons Learned:
1. Frequently check the wiring in your trunk!
2. Do not over-pack your trunk!
3. Don't put anything in the trunk you couldn't bear living without! We are so lucky we didn't haphazardly throw Chris's huge suitcase of clothes from the last two weeks or his guitar or our computers with photos and schoolwork. What was lost is replaceable, at least we have our lives!
I'm still a little shooken up but will be back to regular posting shortly.
Awwwww! SO glad you're okay and most of your possessions were alright; that sounds very, very scary.

So glad this didn't turn into a really awful situation. Sorry for losing the stuff I know guitar pedals are horrible to lose we've had to replace some stolen ones here before. Just think of it as the opportunity to get new favorite stuff.

Oh my Gosh, that's so horrible, but a blessing that it didn't explode like cars do in movies..
ReplyDeleteI can imagine the fender strat would have burned quick too...
So glad that you didnt have to drive even further, as it could have spread more!!! I've never experienced that.. but an idiot did hit my car causing it to be a complete right off :(
I am so, so glad you both are okay and alive. So sorry to hear about the things that did get ruined, but you are so right -- you were able to save the things that were most important, including each other. I'm glad your parents came to help you.
ReplyDeleteOhhh, I am sorry about this! Thanks a lot for you advice. I will keep all these in my next time I pack my car. Sorry.

ReplyDeleteWhat great parents you have. That's so selfless of them to just hop in the car to you. That's what parents are for!
I hope your week ends up being fantastic despite this awful start. You have such a great, positive attitude about it that I admire!
Oh Liz, that's terrible, but at least everyone is OK and you guys were at a safe place when the problem was discovered.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry Liz! That is just awful. I'm so glad you are ok and that the major equipment wasn't damaged! Thank God for wonderful parents!!!
